Service-learning courses aim to equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills for real-world situations. However, a key challenge lies in the gap between classroom learning and encountering unexpected situations, particularly when serving children with special needs. Identifying children needing support and handling crises like emotional breakdowns are crucial yet difficult skills to develop before real-life service begins.
This project explores the transformative potential of immersive technologies, specifically 360-degree videos. Pilot studies involving these videos showcased potential challenges students might face during service activities. Students reported a deeper understanding of children’s needs and emotions through this immersive perspective, allowing them to be better prepared for service delivery.
The project is driven by the positive impact witnessed on student learning. Students who viewed the videos demonstrated improved service delivery, as evidenced by a Christmas party activity. They showcased increased awareness of service target needs, stronger teamwork, and enhanced problem-solving skills. This success, coupled with student desire for innovative learning, motivates the development of the DLTG project, which aims to further explore and refine immersive technologies for service-learning education.
